Sensory World! For People Affected by Sensory Disorders

My son is 8 with Aspergers. He has a number of sensory problems most have a connetion with clothing. A big on is that inorder to go to the toilet ( num 2 ) G has to remove all his clothing I mean everything. This can be a big problem at school ( where he will not go ) he will use the toilet once home! Also a problem when out. It don't help as he also has a fear that the toilet door will lock. It's been this way for as long as i can remember. Anybody have or know of anybody with a sensory problem of this kind? Or have any good ideas on how to make things a little easier for him?
Thanks Claire Louise

I remember reading your blog post about this recently. Do you his reasoning for this? Does he think his clothing will get soiled or does it just get "in the way" or something else?

Thanks for the comment. It seems to me that it's the way in which he fells most comfortable. He used to hate wearing clothing all together! But he started to get that little bit older and hated girls to see him naked. Bless his cotton socks ( which i must add he also hates wearing ) Yes so I think it's because he likes to fell free when using the toilet.
PS Nice to hear from you and hope to speak to you soon. :)

Oh dear...my husband will kill me for posting this, but he insists on coming home to go to the bathroom. I am not kidding. Luckily we only live a block from his office.

Does he do okay, physically, not going #2 during the school day? Except for when his tummy is ill (like that one time) maybe he would be okay saving that for the privacy of his own home. I know some people think that is just not sanitary to do anywhere but their own private toilet.

Have you tried very very gradually acclimating him to having something on his skin while he is going? I wonder if he feels the need to concentrate on #2 and being clothing-free is the only way to concentrate in his opinion. On the bright side, his refusal to go in school might mean that he recognizes what is and isn't socially appropriate.

My dd, who is also 8, has severe tactile defensiveness. She does the EXACT same thing. It's just oo much sensory input for her when she's got to go. I'll try to think of an idea about the toilet locking.

I talk all about our journey. I have another friend that I found on here who has a 10 year old who also struggles a lot. It's good that we can connect.

Just wanted to add, our OT told us not to worry about her getting naked when going. If she has to go when we're out, it can be a problem. I just try to make sure her clothes don't land on the floor. Yuck.
