Hi Jennifer and Kelley, I also have a child with adhd. He is 4 1/2. I agree that mornings are usually a headache. They just don't like to be rushed. He also might have ODD but dr doesn't want to test him for that untill we get the adhd under 'contr…

Good afternoon Jennifer! I see this post was from March 2009. In the last few months have you found any tricks that work well for you? Our mornings with my 7 year old daughter sound like just what you describe. All her clothing from her underwear, s…

You are spot on! Wow, I am so thrilled to see that I am not as retentive and obesessive as I had once feared. Being prepared is the whole name of the game when it comes to these kids. I have the closet organizers, the shoe holders, everything is set…

We pick out our clothes the night before but this does not always help. My daugher is much more sensitive in the morning and her feet are the most sensitive - so we put her new socks on the night before and this has made a huge difference. I have ev…

I have mild autisim and I am very much the same way. I have intense claustrophobia so maybe she does to. Sometimes in the dark my mind plays tricks on me and I see or hear things that aren't there so maybe that happens with her as well. I don't know…

I posted this suggestion as a reply to another post about meltdowns as well. This is a way to work through problems with kids that have lots of meltdowns (working through at times other than their meltdowns) to help the child come up with strategie…

Please email me if you like. We have only been diagnosed and in OT for about 4 months, but we've been struggling with this for about 3 years and lots of bad advice. You don't say how old Ashley is, but our meltdowns much improved around age 4, and i…

Yes!! Ashley was born with a cleft lip and palate and never slept cried a lot and was a very high need baby and I put much of this on not being able to eat well - which didn't make since when she did start eating well. At the end of January I knew t…

I had this mini tramp in the garage for years, but they are all over the place in used sports equipment stores. We've gone through two, $3 Bop Bags (Wal-mart), too. My son has the need for deep sensory input in his tummy and hands. Next, I'm going f…

Thank you SOO much I will look into that. I think it would work really well for her because she does not like orders all morning long. I was thinking about getting a mini trap. is it a good investment? I let her jump on the couch this morning (we ar…

I may have heard this on this site, but it has helped with my six-year-old, and would really be great for all kids. You can make (or buy--there's a great one from Melissa and Doug I got at a consignment shop) a chart for the morning and the evening…

Does anyone know where I can find some good information on allergies and SPD? We have been fighting allergies for years (along with what I now know is SPD) and was thinking to try to start an elimanation diet for Ashley. She is allergict to milk, eg…

She I agree with Ashley when things are good she is great but I'm always waiting for something to go wrong and a meltdown start. And it seems to be getting worse. She is always asking "what can I do now" she has to be doing something all the time. I…

How do sensory disorders affect your life?
My daughter has SPD, (tactile defensivness, bilateral intergration problems) this is all new to me. I first found out about SPD in Jan 09 and knew this was my daughter. I knew she wasn't a "bad child" and that her behavior was not normal. She was tested Feb. 09and start therapy today Mar. 09. Getting ready for school brings headaches for everyone in our family. Every morning is a drama no matter if she picks out her clothes or not. She loves dance and twirling and has no problems being in front of people dancing just don't get her to talk... lol She is always worried when people laugh she thinks its at her and this is a new behavior (started maybe 6 months ago) . Ok I think I wrote enough for now! lol
About Me:
My name is Jennifer. I have 2 children Ashley (June 03') and Wyatt (12/06). Both my children and myself are cleft affected, and they both have food and enviormental allergies. So far Ashley is my only SPD child but I'll keep a close eye on Wyatt. In both of our families there are members with some sensory issues .

Today starts a new journey

My children have helped me go through journeys I never thought of when dreaming of that perfect baby I would have one day. My thoughts on perfect babies is.... they all are! We are all so perfectly imperfect! Our past journeys (which we still deal with daily) included surgeries, food allergies, consent ear infections, chiroprators and now SPD and Occupational Theraphy. Today is Ashley's first day at the therapist and she is super excited (she thinks its the coolest place ever). I wish it would j… Continue
