Children who live with autism and have meltdowns and sensory overload need to learn how to live with their conditions. This is important because a child with autism is going to eventually become an adult with autism. That makes it our job as parents to teach our children how to cope with their conditions for the best chances in life. Certainly you wonder how we do this? I have some suggestions.

My daughter is 7 years old and is having the hardest time wearing any clothing. She has 2 pair of yoga pants from Wal Mart that are getting too small and ripping. Now they do not make them in a bigger size and seem to have discontinued even the smaller size she is wearing. I have tried every store- Gymboree, Target, Old Navy, Other Wal Mart styles, Sears, Hannah Andersen, and she rejects everything saying they are not soft enough- she can feel the seams. Dresses are the same problem as are to

Good news has come in regarding the case of young Zakhqurey Price in Fort Smith, Arkansas. On this Monday, the 15th they held a hearing for due process in the matter of complaints about Zakh’s educational rights. In that hearing, the school district elected to settle in favor of Zakh’s needs and will endeavor to make things right for him educationally.
So what could this

I’m writing this because it’s important that we not lose steam in the fight for Zakh Price and kids like him across the country. In doing so, I would like to reiterate some of the important issues at stake here.
Zakh is eleven and is being charged as a felon for assault because he struggled against two adults trying to perform a restraint on him that was against his IEP (Individual Education Plan). During the struggle he kicked one of the adults who happened to be the principal. This was not an…

Today I want to share with you another example of how dissention in the autism community can hurt us. To do this I am going to share an unfortunate event with an “organization” that claims to collect donations for autism. They also claim to provide deluxe free services to autism families. That’s all fine and good and they do have some pod casts and other resources. But for however good they may be, the tarnished themselves by attacking someone they should have been helping, and more.
This group…

Zakh Price, an eleven year old autistic boy who faces felony charges that couldn’t be more trumped up with an air compressor. As if that weren’t enough for his troubled family to deal with, there’s more. Despite what must be hundreds of emails pleading for sanity in his case, the prosecutor could care less. Despite what must be hundreds of emails and a twitter to at least 80,000 people, just one news agency has yet to step forward. Apparently, the story just isn’t juicy enough for any of them. Y…

When a child has a condition that they are going to have for the rest of their life, it’s important that they grow up with an understanding of themselves. You might wonder, what the best age is to start teaching them about their conditions. To answer that, I ask you this; does your child even possibly overhear you talking about their condition?
Consider child cancer patients for a moment. So many of them are such troopers. They take their cancer as a simple fact of life because it’s what they h…

I was once asked, not real long ago, why I just “don’t tell” anyone that I have a form of autism. Why am I so gung ho about the autistic community and advocacy? Why is it so important that people are educated about autism?
Well, personally, I have tried this. It doesn’t work because there’s always something that happens that someone wants explained. Like when I flinch because of a movement I caught out of the corner of my eye and someone gets all offended over it. Yes, this has actually happene…

Zakh Price is 11 years old and holds a functioning IQ of 68, as far as anyone knows. It’s really hard to believe they know enough about this child at all since they want to have him charged with felony assault. Did I mention he has autism?
Zakh’s family literally begged the school district in Arkansas for an IEP and were denied. Even when one was finally established, it wasn’t followed. The school personnel ignored all advice on how to properly deal with Zakh and that led to disaster. In Octobe…

Friends and families in and of autism, I have something very special to talk to you about today. I want to talk to you about an amazing woman and her goal to help autism families across the nation. It all started in Cordova, Tennessee where Laura Corby started the Autism Solution Center.
What is the Autism Solution Center? Well, my first suggestion is that you take an online trip to autismsolutioncenter.com. Next I will tell you that it’s a place that offers no cost assistance to autism familie…

The decision to put a child on medication is never a light one. I can count many a parent who has said to me, “ I will never put my child on medication”. There is always some reason behind their strong feelings and usually it involves the fear that they will lose the person their child really is. They don’t want their child to be a zombie or controlled in “that way”.
Because of that, I find it bears repeating ad nauseam: The purpose of a medication is NOT to control your child. The purpose of a…

Several years ago, I tried a treatment that I thought of as fairly radical. I felt skeptical but in need of something more in my treatment to control bipolar disorder and co morbid conditions of my Asperger’s Syndrome. The treatment; neurofeedback. Neurofeedback is a balancing treatment for your brainwaves, and it actually works.
Neurofeedback, also called neurotherapy or EEG biofeedback is a process of training conscious control of various brainwave patterns by showing the patient results of b…

I feel I must explain myself. In some of my blogs I have been very harsh in my opinion and reports. I’ve been harsh on some professional places. Our police dispatch for example, yes I’ve been very harsh on them. But why? Am I just angry because things didn’t go my way? The answer is a devoted NO. The truth is that I am driven when it comes to matters of public safety, public awareness that contributes to safety and more. It’s a drive to me and I’ll tell you why.
First, what is a drive? What do…

A series of serious events has unfolded and given me cause to take action. I had to make a terrible decision that tore out a piece of me and the rest of the issues are doing considerable damage in impact.
I am seriously, grievously and even spiritually injured. And the nightmare is only beginning. I have no one to turn to now but God. Yes, part of that is my own fault, but I strongly feel I had no choice. I cannot explain that at this time.
What I can say is that, for now, it has to be just my…

This is being posted in all my blogs because I think it's very important. It's original post is at Sheboygan Press dot com as that is the community I live in and where this happened. I hope you will give some of your own input in this challenge, even if only here.
If you were given advice by an organization with solid reputation for helping others, and it turned out to be in error, would you be upset? How about if you were the one who got to be berated and verbally punished for following that a…

Have you ever had something you wanted to do that you could see in your mind but just couldn't get to come out that way? I think we all have this problem sometimes. I recently realized that my son has one, his handwriting.
Asperger's folks are not known for good handwriting, quite the opposite. My own handwriting is pitiful and I admit it. As an artist I sometimes have a picture in my mind and have trouble translating it to paper. It's very frustrating when that happens. I sometimes have to wal…

Trick or treating here in Sheboygan is actually very well planned. It’s suggested that you only go from 4-7 pm and I’ve had a couple suggest that is the law here. The press recently posted the advice of the police department that while trick or treating you pay attention to where you go. If there is a problem, you should report it. Please remember that last sentence.
After going around with some friends, my son wanted to try a couple of houses on the way home so I let him. All went well until w…

This is part two of my “remembering heroes” bloggings and today I want to talk about another teacher. In the days of my 5th grade year I was asked if I would take part in something of a school expirament. The administration wondered what would happen if some fifth and sixth graders were combined in classes.
I’m not sure if they wanted to know if two grades could just be taught at the same time, or if it were possible for some students to even skip a grade. I took part all the same. We were quit…
